RAPAPORT... The controversy surrounding the recent sale of a 68-carat diamond to Fifth Avenue jewelry retailer Taly Diamond reached a climax on Friday, when federal agents seized the stone, the New York Post reported.
The diamond was transported to New York in September 2009 by diamond dealer Dennis Van Kerrebroeck, immigration and Customs enforcement agent Todd Hyman told The Post. Van Kerrebroeck allegedly agreed to buy the diamond from a South African mining company and cleared it through Customs without the mining company’s knowledge. The diamond was then allegedy sold for $1 million, or one-third of its actual value.
A law enforcement source said that agents are currently trying to locate Van Kerrebroeck for questioning. Meanwhile, The Post reported that Taly Diamond has hired a law firm to get the diamond back, as they believe that it was purchased fair and square.
